We stopped by recently and the whole area was buzzing—right next to @basiccitybeer and across from @bonobosbakery, it’s one of those weekend morning spots that’s packed for a reason.
We ordered the Biscuit Sando (just $8)—fried egg, cheddar, local bourbon ham, and berry jam on a house biscuit. Delicious, a little different, and the perfect medium-sized bite.
At Happ, everything happens under one roof, with coffees thoughtfully sourced and roasted on-site before making their way into your cup. The space is bright and airy, and there’s even a super cute gift shop filled with art prints, home goods, mugs, drawing books, and local finds.

We stopped by Aster — opening May 1st in the Glass Building (next to The Bardo and Noble Steakhouse) — to meet chef Drew Dunston and beverage manager Caleb Russell and learn more about what they’re creating.
The concept: laid-back, but dialed in - very Charlottesville in spirit. Think “fried chicken and champagne” — exceptional food and drink without the formality. A New American menu rooted in Virginia, with seasonal ingredients, local sourcing, and influences from Appalachian traditions to Japanese technique. The beverage program leans into local beer, thoughtful pairings, craft-forward cocktails, and a serious love of wine.
Both Drew and Caleb are local, with deep ties to food and farming — from Appalachian family recipes to early mornings milking cows — and you can feel how much that shapes what they’re building. After years working in top kitchens around the country, then working as head chef at Marigold, Drew is back in Charlottesville creating something of his own that celebrates this place, alongside Caleb’s roots in the local food and wine scene.
There’s a strong sense of place here — from sourcing ingredients just steps away at the farmers market to details like tables crafted from a white oak tree from Montpelier. Even the name, Aster, reflects a story of leaving and coming back.
It’s a team of friends, a shared vision, and a real appreciation for Charlottesville. Congrats to the team at @astercville! We can`t wait to see the vision come to life.

We stopped by Speak! — now teaching out of The Vault co-working space upstairs — where shared community areas meet dedicated rooms for private lessons and small group classes.
In this reel, we sat in on some lunch chatter between Christina (founder and director) and two of her teachers (including a sweet moment about their 4-year anniversary), then headed upstairs for a look at the space. We genuinely loved spending time with the team — there’s such a light, fun energy between them that makes you want to sit down, stay awhile, and learn.
Founded in Charlottesville over 20 years ago, Speak! has always been about connection — not just language, but culture. Some of you may remember its early days above Milano in the Main Street Market, where students gathered to learn Italian over coffee. In many ways, this new chapter above the Bradbury Cafe feels like a return to those roots.
Today, @speaklanguagecenter continues to focus on real, in-person learning — offering one-on-one lessons, small group classes, and relaxed Conversation Sessions designed to help you practice speaking and build confidence. We stopped back by the Virginia Wine Collective and… it’s really hitting its stride. 🍕🥂✨
If you haven’t been (or haven’t been in a while), there’s a lot new — expanded hours, a fresh pizza menu, a revamped upstairs lounge, and shuffleboard!
We went on a Friday and caught one of their Winemaker Pop-Ups — featuring tastings from local independent makers (this time with Josh Cataldo, former head winemaker at Glass House), plus a full space, great energy, and people really getting into it.
The concept is what makes @virginiawinecollective special — supporting independent winemakers through shared space and an incubator-style program — and now with pizza and bites, wine and beer, and a lively atmosphere, it’s a really fun night out. Highly recommend the Pizza Shop salad and White Pizza - both delicious!
